Mercury

What is Mercury (Hg)?
Mercury (symbol: Hg, atomic number 80) is a silvery-white, heavy, and liquid metal at room temperature. It is the only metal that remains in a liquid state under normal conditions. Mercury is also known as “quicksilver.”
Properties of Mercury:
✅ Liquid Metal – The only metal that is naturally liquid at room temperature.
✅ High Density – It is very dense, making it useful in scientific instruments.
✅ Toxicity – Mercury is highly toxic and can harm the nervous system if inhaled or ingested.
✅ Good Conductor – Conducts electricity but not heat as efficiently as other metals.
Uses of Mercury:
🔹 Thermometers & Barometers – Used in measuring instruments (though now largely replaced due to toxicity).
🔹 Batteries & Electrical Equipment – Found in some older batteries and switches.
🔹 Gold Extraction – Used in mining to extract gold from ore.
🔹 Fluorescent Lights – Found in some older bulbs.
